Kaffir Boy

In the story Kaffir Boy, kaffir is refered to as a black person. Kaffir is the South African way of saying black person as to the American word 'nigger'. Either word is used to discriminate Africans and African Americans. During the story 'master Clyde', a little boy refers to a boy almost his age as a kaffir. They learn these sayins in school and they think it is okay to use because that is all they know. On line 19, Mrs. Smith tells Clyde, " I thought I told you a million times to leave all that rubbish about Kaffirs in the classroom. Ellen's people are not Kaffirs, you hear! They're Bantus....". Although she tries to defend Granny and her grandson she still degrades them and doesn't really think nothing of it. This is a type of micro-agression because she just does it so easily.
We were not born to hate people who are different. We are raised that way. We can control how we are raised but why let it continue on when we get older? Personally coming from a young African American female it would be extremely hard to let slavery go. Having a group of individuals not liking you just because of your skin color. Not even just black people but different races are also hated by whites and I just wish the world wasn't this scary place to live in.

Stolen Party

In 'Stolen Party' there is an example of another single story. Just like how in 'Girl' there was the single  story of women. 'Stolen Party' single story is the story of spanish people can only be seen as maids and nothing more. Rosaura is a young girl who believes that she got invited to a rich girls party. She goes on the whole night believing that she is a part of the party. It's sad to think that Rosaura thought she was actually apart of the fun but little did she know she was helping the fun go on. She didn't realize she was working the party until the end when she got paid instead of getting a goody bag like all the other kids.
Spanish people have a simple single story of being maids and taking care of other people. They are not to be seen as rich so when they are rich it's a shocker for everyone to see. Rosaura lives by the single story of being a maid and that's all she knows.

Girl

Why is it that girls live by a single story? A single story that females are required to provide for their men, children , and live up to the expectation of being a women. Everybody grows up to learn these things, it's up to us to proceed with what we learn.
My perspective of a males single story goes something along the lines of this. Males are supposed to be strong. Males are the ones who do the yard work and sweat all day outside. Males are supposed to bring in the money while the female makes sure the kids well being is taken care of. Males are not allowed to cry. Males are not allowed to show a lick of emotion. If a male shows even the slightest bit of emotion they are labeled gay. Males are supposed to be great mechanics. Males are also supposed to open every door for his lady whenever they are out. Males are supposed to be the drivers when him and his lady are out. Males are supposed to like to watch sports. Males are not required to always look nice when they go out. That's just a personal option.
So, why is society like this. Why do we live by single stories? Why don't we just live life how we want to live it and not have to live up to society's standards. Reading "Girl" just opens up peoples eyes to what female have to go through just to be accepted in America.
